Art direction and style frames for opening titles. Two Sony original series and a feature documentary, on air. Twenty years of art direction, 3D and VFX behind every frame.
How I work on a title sequence, commissioned or my own. The point of resolving everything as stills is that changing your mind stays cheap — right up until the moment it stops being cheap.
What does the show promise in its first sixty seconds? Tone comes before image — get this wrong and every frame after it is decoration.
One rule strong enough to hold twenty-five cards together: a light, a texture, a recurring gesture. The system is what makes a sequence feel authored instead of assembled.
Every card designed as a still, in sequence. This is where the title is approved — before a single frame moves, and before anyone spends a day animating the wrong idea.
The frames become a sequence, timed to music. Because the direction is already resolved in the stills, animating is execution rather than exploration — nothing gets discovered late, when it is expensive.
I'm an art director. For twenty years I've been deciding what an image says before it says anything — in advertising, in 3D, in VFX, and for the last few years in title sequences.
A main title is a strange, wonderful brief. You get sixty seconds to set the tone of an entire series, and you have to carry twenty-five credit cards through it without anyone getting bored. It isn't decoration: it's the first promise the show makes to its audience. Everything I like about this job lives in that problem.
I design the visual system and the style frames — every card, every rule, every decision about light and type. Today I take a project the whole way through, from concept to finished sequence.
I also build with generative AI, and I keep a separate body of work for it. What it changes here is development: instead of pitching a universe as a moodboard, I can show it — style frames, key art and a moving title in weeks instead of months. The tools render. The direction still decides. See the generative work →
